What Are You Really Saying?

We communicate with words all day long from the minute we wake up until we go to bed each night.  However, words themselves only convey a piece of what we are trying to say.  Our tone and other nonverbal cues can have a significant impact on our words.  We need to be aware of what our body language is communicating while we are speaking.  Wikipedia defines nonverbal communication (or NVC) as “the process of communication through sending and receiving wordless messages.”  So if someone asks us how we are doing, we can say “Great!” with a smile on our face or “Great!” with a harsh tone and our arms crossed.  The same word can take on two totally different meanings.

There are many situations that we need to be aware of the impact or NVC has on what we are communicating.  Whether in a meeting, in an interview or simply dealing with coworkers, NVC can have a huge impact.  In nursing specifically, observation skills are a key component to diagnosing a patient.  This recent post at Nursing Link, Body Language Every Nurse Should Know digs deeper into NVC patients demonstrate, as well as coworkers.

The next time you are in a heated debate or important discussion, keep in mind your NVC and what your body language is communicating in relation to what your saying.  You may be sending a mixed message without even realizing it.
