Be Your Own Brand

As I have mentioned before my undergraduate degree is in Mass Communications, Public Relations.  So I took a few classes in school in advertising and marketing.  I find the topic fascinating.  Branding is everywhere from products to employers.  Sometimes a product jingle sticks in our head, but we can’t remember other important details in life without jotting a note down.  But how about branding you?

In a job search, you are essentially marketing yourself.  You are “selling” your education, skills and experience to an employer.   In a competitive job market it is very important to make a great first impression.  Maintaining a level of professionalism and thoughtfulness throughout the selection process is helpful as well.  I came across this post and video http://www.myfoxtampabay.com/dpp/news/local/1229-branding-good-day on our local Fox News affiliate here in Tampa and thought it was an interesting concept.  There are good tips, although I’m not certain that I agree of going to the extreme of a name change.

Many of us probably have our own brand without realizing it.  It is the perceptions others have of us.  Are we kind, punctual, or confrontational?  Introverted or the life of the party?    Maybe if you are not happy with your existing brand and how others view you, the New Year is a great time to make changes.  Working on your areas of opportunity is an easy way to improve your own personal brand.  What do you think?  Do you agree or disagree with the idea of being your own brand?

Happy New Year to you all.  I wish you great success in your career in 2010.
