Tobacco/Smoke-Free in 2010!

Most of us are aware of the risks associated with cigarette smoking and tobacco abuse, but did you know that it is officially the leading preventable cause of death in our country?  In an effort to fight back against this killer habit, nearly all U.S. hospitals are now maintaining a tobacco/smoke-free campus.

The standard of a tobacco/smoke-free campus is sweeping through our division at HCA West Florida as well.  Several of our HCA West Florida Division’s hospitals have already instituted a tobacco/smoke-free campus and others are currently considering this option.

The goal of the tobacco/smoke-free campus is to provide a safe and healthy environment for everyone we touch, from patients to employees, physicians to volunteers and our hospital visitors.

I’m excited about this new standard for our hospitals.  As someone who lost a loved one to lung cancer and also a healthcare worker aware of the risks associated with tobacco and cigarette use, it seems logical to me that our country’s healthcare institutions would want to assume a unified front against such a notorious killer.  I look forward to the difference our smoke-free campuses will make in our communities, both extending the life and health of our employees and the patients we serve.
